I. What is Heavy Petroleum?


Heavy petroleum, abbreviated as heavy oil, is a petroleum product with a density greater than 1.0 g/cm³ and a viscosity greater than 100 mPa·s. Heavy petroleum is the product obtained in the final step of the oil refining process. Its main components are macromolecular heteroatom compounds, such as wax, asphalt, etc. Heavy petroleum presents a semi-solid or solid state at room temperature and has relatively poor fluidity.


II. Characteristics of Heavy Petroleum


  1. High Density
    The density of heavy petroleum is usually high, which requires more space and energy during the storage and transportation processes.

  2. High Viscosity
    Due to its relatively complex molecular structure, heavy petroleum often has a high viscosity at room temperature and poor fluidity.

  3. High Boiling Point
    The boiling point of heavy petroleum is usually high, which means that a higher temperature is needed to completely vaporize it during the heating process.

  4. High Sulfur Content
    Compared with light petroleum, the sulfur content in heavy petroleum is often higher, which increases the environmental challenges during its processing.

  5. High Metal Content
    Heavy petroleum often contains a relatively high content of metal elements, such as nickel, vanadium, etc. These metal elements may cause catalyst poisoning or equipment corrosion during the processing.

  6. High Asphaltene and Resin Content
    The content of asphaltenes and resins in heavy petroleum is high. These components are likely to form deposits during the processing, affecting the normal operation of the equipment.

  7. Difficult Processability
    Due to the above characteristics, heavy petroleum requires higher temperatures and pressures, as well as more complex technological processes during the processing, which increases its processing cost and difficulty.


III. Uses of Heavy Petroleum


  1. Fuel Uses
    (1) Marine Fuel: Due to its high energy density, heavy petroleum has become an important fuel source for large ships. In the shipping industry, the demand for marine heavy oil continues to grow, especially for medium and low-speed diesel engines that do not require high speeds but have high power demands.
    (2) Power Plant Fuel: Power plants also often use specialized heavy petroleum to operate generators to meet energy demands.

  2. Chemical Raw Materials
    (1) Asphalt Production: Heavy petroleum is an important raw material for producing asphalt, which is widely used in fields such as road construction and waterproof materials.
    (2) Lubricating Oil: Through specific processing techniques, heavy petroleum can be converted into various lubricating oils, which are used for the lubrication and cooling of mechanical equipment.
    (3) Paraffin Wax: Heavy petroleum can also be used to produce paraffin wax, which is widely used in candle making, packaging materials, and other aspects.

  3. Other Industrial Uses
    In the industrial production of ceramics, glass, leather goods, etc., heavy petroleum also has specific application requirements to meet the performance and efficiency requirements of different industries.
